In celebration of Polk County’s long and rich agricultural history and Earth Month, Platform Art, Inc. is hosting their 19th art party Art in AgriCulture April 28 in downtown Lakeland from 7 to 11 p.m.
Platform Art parties are famous in Lakeland for bringing together various forms of art to one location. Visual art, short films, sound, and performance pieces focusing on Polk County’s agricultural heritage will be presented by students from the Harrison School for the Arts, the Lakeland Community Redevelopment Agency and various other artists and partners.
To highlight the agriculture in Lakeland works of art will be added to the city’s “urban agriculture,” in conjunction with the City of Lakeland and numerous community partners, and unveiled the night of the party.
The term “urban agriculture” is a broad term that at it’s most basic definition encompasses growing plants and raising animals within a city. Lakeland has many great examples of urban agriculture such as the Hollis Garden, various gardens on the Florida Southern College campus, and shade trees in the downtown area.
St. Petersburg artist Charlie Parker is working on a large tile mural for Art in AgriCulture to be installed on the Orange Street Bridge. In addition to the mural, a garden will be planted on the corner of New York Avenue and Orange Street. Once installed by the Lakeland Public Works Department, the mural and the garden will serve as a gateway to guide pedestrians from The Lakeland Center to the downtown area, Hollis Garden and the Frances Langford Promenade at Lake Mirror.
For tickets to Art In Agriculture, order online at www.platformart.org. Tickets are $15 in advance, and $20 the day of the event, $10 with valid student ID.
