LAKELAND, FL – The science fiction/fantasy/surrealism-influenced art of Brandon artist James McCarthy will be featured at The Loft Art Gallery in July.

The show debuts during the First Friday festivities in downtown Lakeland on July 5. A free reception with live music, wine and hors d’oeuvres is scheduled for 6 - 9 p.m.

McCarthy also considers himself a landscape painter, and he often is inspired by “mind-scape” music, such as progressive rock, new age, classical, psychedelic and medieval music, he says.

McCarthy was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan but has lived in Florida most of his life. He was a painting major at the University of South Florida from 1977-1981. He also worked for his father at Design/Art, a commercial art studio, until 2001.

He started to seriously pursue painting in 1999 and has exhibited his work in various galleries throughout the Tampa Bay area.
