For nearly two hundred years, over 40 here in Winter Haven, the poor and needy have found a friend when they call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. When we visit with the poor of all creeds, races, and needs, we hear their stories and see their efforts where ever they make their homes. These times are forcing people into situations they have never had to face before for themselves and their children.
To show public concern for the poor among us, The Society of St. Vincent de Paul will again sponsor this once-a-year "Walk a Mile in My Shoes" Friends of the Poor Walk on Saturday, March 22, beginning at 8:30am at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Park in Winter Haven, and circling Lake Silver(about 1.1 miles). Last year's walk was a great experience for people from all kinds of neighborhoods who pledged financial support and walked nearly 1500 miles as friends of the poor. The divisions among us, quickly disappear when we walk together at times like this, and give a voice to those whose voices are often hard to hear.
