International Market World Announces Festival for Toys Fundraiser to Benefit Toys for Tots on November 8th and 9th

Auburndale, Fla  October 31, 2014 - International Market World will host the Festival for Toys fundraiser November 8th and 9th  from 10 am to 5 pm for Polk County Toys for Tots to assist the organization in it’s mission of providing new, unwrapped toys for the needy children of Polk County during the holidays. In addition to food vendors, the Festival for Toys fundraiser will offer three stages of entertainment featuring bluegrass bands, country bands, and cloggers.  Gold Wing Express, Bits of Grass and the Larry Gillis Band will be performing at this year's event.  Additional attractions include wildlife displays, safety displays and more. Festival attendants are invited to bring an unwrapped toy to the event. Admission to the event and parking is free.

The fundraiser is aimed at assisting the shortfall suffered by Toys for Tots over the past several years. According to the organization, the annual number of toys collected has fallen from 12,000 to under 3,000 for 2013. In that year, Toys for Tots provided toys under the tree for over 10,000 children in Polk County. Many of those toys were purchased with reserves, an expense that cannot be continually supported.

Vendors are encouraged to participate. November is a busy time at International Market World, with foot traffic numbering in the thousands on the weekends. Many more attendants are expected due to the special event.

Davenport native Mark Stephens has lived in Los Angeles, California for over 20 years, but when it came time to film his pet project he could think of no better place to do so than home.  This September Mark and his writing/producing partner Jillian Boyd will be filming a TV pilot/webseries in Davenport, Winter Haven, and Lakeland.
“Welcome to Our Mansion” is the story of Paul Jones, a 35-year-old, New York City behavior therapist who is forced to return to the craziness of his Southern, country roots in Central Florida to be the executor of his recently deceased father’s will, while living with his dysfunctional family on their mobile home “estate.”
So far, this project has cast Central Florida natives for five of the main character roles with more casting announcements on the way.  As well as employing numerous local talent for the production, they are also in talks with a local film crew about heading up cinematography, lighting, and sound.  Mark is utilizing the locale, the talent, and the characters inspired by his beloved Polk County.
Though the film shoot is a definite “Go,” the producers have started an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds to help offset expenses.  They’d like to move from a “thin thread budget to a fat shoelace budget.”  In four short weeks the campaign has raised almost $15,000 of the $30,000 they had hoped for.  They have secured the support of one local business and hope to add a few more.  These businesses will get product placement in the pilot shoot.  To donate go to:  igg.me/at/mansion
Mark and Jillian’s ultimate goal is to market this pilot to major studios as well as Netflix and Amazon.  That aside, the pilot will be edited into mini-episodes that will air as a free webseries on the internet.  “The dream is to film an entire season of WELCOME TO OUR MANSION here in Polk County,” says Mark, “But the first step is securing all of the funds for post production and marketing.  With Polk County’s help, this dream could happen!”
Collectively, this producing team of Mark and Jillian has worked both in front of and behind the camera with major Hollywood studios and independent filmmakers.  They are eager to bring the excitement of Hollywood to Polk County with WELCOME TO OUR MANSION.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

June 9, 2014

LAKELAND – Polk Museum of Art proudly welcomes an exhibition of black-and-white photography by nationally recognized photographer and author Richard Sexton. The exhibition, “Terra Incognita: Photographs of America’s Third Coast,” is on loan from the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans, La. The photographs will be on view from June 21 through September 13.

Latin for “unknown land,” “Terra Incognita” comprises 57 photos taken over a 15-year span along the Gulf Coast. Photographs depict marsh, scrub lands, dunes, beaches, swamps and forests from the mouth of the Mississippi River to the Florida Panhandle.

R.C. Baker of the Village Voice wrote: “Nothing in these extremely fine-grained prints resembles a ‘snapshot.’ … Sexton’s spare compositions coalesce into a portrait of nature as the ultimate abstractionist.”

Sexton was born in Colquitt, Georgia, and was introduced to the Gulf Coast on family vacations to the Florida panhandle during the 1950s and 1960s. After graduating from Emory University, he moved to California to pursue a career as a professional photographer. He moved to New Orleans in 1991, intending to photograph the city’s architecture. Not long after relocating, he toured the home of Roger Ogden and found himself drawn to 19th century landscape paintings of the South’s swamps and coastal areas in Ogden’s collection, which later was donated to the University of New Orleans Foundation to establish the Ogden Museum of Southern Art.

“It was an epiphany that a significant… school of painting had coalesced around the low-lying, watery landscapes of the region,” Sexton wrote in the foreword to his book, “Terra Incognita.” The artists portrayed “the swamp as a place of mystery and melancholy, using it in a symbolic way, to convey a certain mood.” Thus began Sexton’s work to document the changing environment along the Gulf Coast in “Terra Incognita.”

The exhibition will be celebrated at a reception from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, August 22. The artist will lecture about his work beginning at 6 p.m., followed by a reception featuring light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The reception is open to the public. The event is free for members and $10 for guests.

EXHIBITIONS

Terra Incognita: Photographs of America’s Third Coast

Through September 13

On loan from the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans, La., this exhibition is a photographic project of 15 years’ duration (1991-2006) by nationally recognized photographer and author Richard Sexton. Latin for “unknown land,” “Terra Incognita” consists of 57 black-and-white photographs of marsh, scrub lands, dunes, beaches, swamps and forests along the Gulf Coast from the mouth of the Mississippi River to the Florida Panhandle. According to R.C. Baker of the Village Voice, “Nothing in these extremely fine-grained prints remotely resembles a ‘snapshot.’ … Sexton’s spare compositions coalesce into a portrait of nature as the ultimate abstractionist.” This exhibition is sponsored by Visit Central Florida, Eaglebrooke, Fleetwing, Rodda Construction Inc., Robert & Malena Puterbaugh, the City of Lakeland and the State of Florida.

Reception: 6 p.m. Friday, August 22, with a lecture by Richard Sexton, followed by light hors d’oeuvres and cash bar.

Collected Color

Through September 13

Color is an important part of our world. It allows us to visually recognize, relate, and interact with our surroundings. Because of its enormous impact on how we interpret what we see, color has always been an important attribute of art. But, color is not important for art only because it affects what we see; it also affects how we reproduce what we see so that others may share our creative experiences. It was not until the late 19th century that artists began separating color from naturalism, using it in more expressive ways to emphasize emotion or creative formalism. How has the use of color in art changed? Is color still an important creative component? This exhibition examines how color is represented within the Permanent Collection at Polk Museum of Art.

All Decked Out

Through July 20

As part of Innoskate 2014, the exhibition All Decked Out! will celebrate the artistic and innovative spirit of skateboarding. Polk Museum of Art is proud to host an exhibition of contemporary artworks that smack of the edgy aesthetic so often associated with skating. Co-organized by Chad and Suzie Cardoza, two Tampa-based artists and independent curators of all things skate, this exhibition includes a diverse checklist of works by artists from around the country. Painted skate decks, skateboard photography, skate-related sketches, and assembled sculptures will coalesce to provide audiences a renewed glimpse into the unique and creative state of contemporary skateboard culture.

Photos available.

Ekphrasis

Through August 2

Ekphrasis is a rhetorical exercise first practiced by the ancient Greeks. Essentially, it is a method of creating a new artwork as directly related to or inspired by an already existing work of art. Ekphrasis often takes the form of prose or poetry. The written piece is not necessarily a mere description of the artwork at hand (although it can be), but is a beautifully written account about the subject of the artwork. It is as if an illustration precedes and inspires the written story. For this exhibition, Polk Museum of Art worked with students at the Lakeland Montessori Middle School. Artworks from the Museum’s Permanent Collection were chosen and assigned to students as inspiration for their own explorations into the ancient art of ekphrasis.

LAKELAND, FL Nov, 15, 2013 – The world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales, the symbol of quality and tradition for Anheuser-Busch since 1933, are scheduled to make an appearances in the area on Thursday, December 5, 2013, in the Lakeland Christmas Parade. Their appearance in the parade coincides with a special presentation to Bernie Little Distributors for winning Anheuser-Busch’s Ambassadors of Excellence award.

The eight-horse hitch will be harnessed and hitched to the famous red beer wagon at The Lakeland Center on parade day from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. Then the “Gentle Giants,” as they are often referred to, will participate in the Lakeland Christmas Parade which begins at 7:00 PM.

The Clydesdales’ appearance in Lakeland is one of hundreds made annually by the traveling hitches.  Canadians of Scottish descent brought the first Clydesdales to America in the mid-1800’s.  Today, the giant draft horses are used primarily for breeding and show.

Horses chosen for the Budweiser Clydesdale hitch must be at least three years of age, stand approximately 18 hands – or six feet – at the shoulder, weigh an average of 2,000 pounds, must be bay in color, have four white legs, and a blaze of white on the face and black mane and tail.  A gentle temperament is very important as hitch horses meet millions of people each year.

A single Clydesdale hitch horse will consume as much as 20-25 quarts of feed, 40-50 pounds of hay and 30 gallons of water per day.

Each hitch travels with a Dalmatian.  In the early days of brewing, Dalmatians were bred and trained to protect the horses and guard the wagon when the driver went inside to make deliveries.

The Budweiser Clydesdales can be viewed at the Anheuser-Busch breweries in St. Louis, Mo.; Merrimack, N.H.; and Ft. Collins, Colo.  They also may be viewed at Grant’s Farm in St. Louis and at Warm Springs Ranch, the 300-plus acre Clydesdale breeding farm located near Boonville, Mo.

Philanthropic Organization Is Museum’s Exhibition Sponsor

LAKELAND – Polk Museum of Art is proud to announce an agreement with the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Foundation that will enable the Museum to offer free admission to everyone on Thursdays year-round. Admission will be waived for all visitors to the Museum on Thursdays beginning November 14.

“We are grateful to the Chao Foundation for selecting the Polk Museum of Art as one of the many cultural organizations in the country to receive their support,” said Claire Orologas, executive director of Polk Museum of Art. “There is a deep understanding on their part regarding the role the arts play in enriching the lives of all citizens.”

As part of the foundation’s new agreement with the Museum, the foundation will be supporting about a dozen exhibitions over the coming year, including permanent collection shows, exhibitions featuring works by Florida artists, and exhibitions on loan from institutions such as the Ogden Museum in New Orleans and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

In recent months, the Museum has announced two similar corporate partnership agreements. MIDFLORIDA Credit Union, the presenting sponsor of Mayfaire by-the-Lake, is underwriting the cost of admission on Saturdays, and BB&T, presenting sponsor of the Smithsonian exhibition this fall, is underwriting the cost of admission on Fridays. The Museum anticipates establishing six to eight such partnerships over the next five years, and each of the corporate partners will be able to specify which day of the week they want to sponsor.

THE LOW PAYMENT KINGS HOPE TO SAVE LIVES WITH ANTI-BULLYING SPEAKER

In light of recent tragic events involving bullying in Central Florida, the Low Payment Kings Family of Dealerships are proud to sponsor motivational speaker, Ronnie Bachman.  Bachman has personally experienced bullying and tours North America working to end bullying in our schools.  He will visit Central Florida area middle schools February 4-8, 2014.

“We wish to express our condolences to the family and friends of Rebecca Sedwick,” says Ralph Mahalak, Jr.  “The Mahalak Family and everyone that is a part of the Low Payment King Automotive Group are committed to serving our communities. For years, we have been determined to do all we can to stop bullying.”

“Since 1999, we have sponsored Ronnie to come to schools and help students. We are currently accepting applications from Central Florida schools for his visit in February,” says J.P. Mahalak.

Bachman knows how it feels to be bullied. Born with a severe birth defect, the speaker’s legs were amputated at four-years-old.  His message is one of tolerance, diversity and self-love.  Bachman asks students to “Walk This Way” through a high-energy show.  To Ronnie, not only is “Walk This Way” the name of his foundation, it is also his state of mind.  To “Walk This Way” means to accept ourselves and others for who they are, without making anyone’s life harder.  He aims to stop bullying and school violence before it happens.

Bachman creates his presentations with middle school and 9th grade students in mind.  His methods of reaching out are relevant and aim to teach the young people in our community to be more tolerant and kind to the people around them, regardless of background or outward appearances.

One student wrote this to Bachman after his appearance at their school, “You totally changed us!  I’ve never seen the people in my school stand up, applaud, stay quiet, and learn something in an assembly.  Ever!  Your story was so inspiring.  I learned to love myself for what I have, not hate myself for what I don’t.  You truly are my hero.”

“We’ve seen first-hand the positive impact Ron has on those he speaks to,” says Mike Mahalak. “His message is vital to our community’s youth right now, and we look forward to working with the schools in our community to get Ron in front of as many of our students as we can.”

The Low Payment King Automotive Group Dealerships (Lake Wales Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram of Winter Haven, FIAT of Winter Haven, and Posner Park Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram) are currently accepting applications to have Ronnie Bachman come speak at local schools.

“Bullying can happen to anyone, from grade school all the way to the NFL; and we want to prevent it no matter what age the person is,” says Alex Mahalak. “We are covering all Ronnie Bachman’s costs.  All we ask is the parents and teachers in the community help us get him and his message in front of your students.”

Ronnie Bachman will be in Central Florida February 4-8, 2014.  Please contact Katrina Hill at 863-837-3110 or Katrina@MahalakAutoGroup.com to schedule Ronnie Bachman for your school.

LAKELAND, FL (June 10, 2013) -- The City of Lakeland recently initiated a weight loss program for employees as part of an overall corporate wellness initiative that also includes health screenings and a dedicated clinic for City employees.  Commissioner Troller and Commissioner Merritt are both participating in the weight loss program and they have proposed a friendly bet on who will lose the most weight.  The losing Commissioner will donate $100 to the charity of choice of the other Commissioner.

The weight loss program started May 1st and will run through the end of October with the final weigh-in taking place November 1st.   Commissioner Troller said, “We have had two weigh-ins and I’ve lost over five pounds in four weeks by reducing my intake of fast food and by walking at least 10,000 steps a day per my pedometer.”  He added, “I’ve replaced sweets with fruit and soda with water.

Commissioner Merritt said, “I’m very eager to help promote a healthier community and I believe the Walk Lakeland initiative where I invite members of the community to walk with me on the 1st Tuesday of each month is doing exactly that.  I would like for people to get off the couch and exercise.”  Merritt said, “The friendly bet with Commissioner Troller has given me the little incentive to watch what I eat as I try to exercise more.”

Troller said, “I wear my pedometer every day. May the skinner man win and I’ve already identified my charity of choice to Commissioner Merritt because I’m confident that I’ve got this.” Commissioner Merritt said, “On the first Tuesday of each month I meet up with walkers at a destination around Lakeland for a brisk walk. No timers, no medals, just an opportunity to get up, get out and start walking.”

The next Walk Lakeland event will take place at Lake Hunter.  Walkers will meet at the Lake Hunter Boat Ramp located at 650 Sikes Blvd.on Tuesday, July 2nd at 6 p.m.  Keep track of where the next Walk Lakeland event will take place on the City’s website atwww.lakelandgov.net or receive updates through social media by searching City of Lakeland once you are logged-into Face Book or follow us on Twitter @ lakelandgov.  All ages and fitness abilities welcome.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 5, 2013

(Tallahassee) Because hurricanes can devastate any community taking these deadly storms lightly, the Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) offers “One Dozen Hurricane Season Tips,” outlining important yet often overlooked safety tips Floridians can follow before, during and after a hurricane strikes.

FMEA and the 34 municipal electric utilities it represents used insight gained during past hurricane seasons to develop the helpful tips. In past hurricane emergencies, FMEA and its members mobilized to restore power quickly and safely to customers around the state.

“While we hope for another mild hurricane season, we always need to be prepared for the possibility of several storms,” said Barry Moline, executive director of FMEA. “FMEA and its members are ready to act in the event of an emergency and we urge all Floridians to do the same.”

One Dozen Hurricane Season Tips

1. Following a power outage, unplug all your large appliances and electronics to prevent power surges when electricity is restored, which can often damage equipment and create fire hazards.

2. Remember the “three don’ts” when using generators:  DON’T run a generator in the house; DON’T run a generator in the garage; and, DON’T plug the generator directly into your home’s main electrical system. The first two can lead to asphyxiation and the third can send an electrical charge back into the power grid, posing an electrocution hazard to utility workers. DO run the generator outside in a well-ventilated area and DO plug individual appliances directly into the generator.

3. If your home is flooded, turn off your electrical power until a professional inspects it thoroughly.

4. If you smell gas evacuate immediately and contact your gas company’s emergency phone number.

5.Make sure you have current identification. You might have to pass through identification check points before being allowed access to your home or neighborhood.

6. After the storm, check to see if your home’s weatherhead is damaged – it is located above the electric meter where the wires come out of the pipe. Utility workers cannot reconnect service if this piece of equipment – which is the homeowner’s responsibility – is damaged. If your weatherhead needs repair, please contact a licensed electrician.

7. Utilities often cannot respond to individual customers with special needs during or immediately after a storm. When warned of an incoming storm, have a plan in place for evacuating people with special needs. Know the location of special needs shelters in case you are unable to evacuate. If you or someone in your family has special electrical medical equipment needs, notify your electric utility prior to a storm’s arrival.

8. Visit www.FloridaDisaster.org to determine your hurricane evacuation route.

9. Capture water in your water heater by turning off power to the unit and closing the water valves. If you lose water pressure, you will have about 40 gallons of fresh water stored in the tank. Store additional water in your bathtub and fill the washing machine with water. This water supply can be used for cleaning or to operate your toilets.

10. Clear your patio and yard of lawn furniture, toys, potted plants, and other debris that can blow around in high winds, causing damage or injury. Bring these items indoors or place them in a garage.

11. Prior to the storm, identify the places around your home where you can shut off your gas, water and electricity. In an emergency, you might need to turn them off quickly.

12. Create a hurricane survival kit that includes:  first aid supplies; water (at least one gallon/person/day); batteries; flashlights; battery powered radio; manual can opener; prescriptions; baby food and diapers; pet food; canned foods; cash; tarps; rope; bleach; trash bags; charcoal or gas grill with plenty of fuel; wooden kitchen matches; and a portable cooler. Don’t forget a hardwire, corded phone; cordless phones will not work during a power outage.

About FMEA: The Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) represents the unified interests of 34 public power communities across the state, providing electricity to more than three million Florida residential and business consumers.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Aug. 9, 2012 – School superintendents from Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Lake and Polk counties today joined Disney VoluntEARS and Mickey Mouse to celebrate a record 3.1 million supplies and 13,000 backpacks that are on the way to students across Central Florida.

The supplies, all donated by Disney Cast Members and Walt Disney World Resort, were collected during the annual Back-to-School Supply Drive. The initiative is part of Disney’s long-standing tradition of supporting school children in Central Florida from early learning through college.

“With the Back-to-School drive, our mission is to help set students up for success, even if it is one pencil at a time,” said Nancy Gidusko, director of community relations for Walt Disney World Resort. “We not only want to make a difference for the students, but also inspire others to support and nurture the children who are the future of our community.”

Orange County Superintendent Dr. Barbara Jenkins, Osceola County Superintendent Melba Luciano, Lake County Superintendent Dr. Susan Moxley, Seminole County Superintendent Walt Griffin and Polk County Superintendent Dr. Sherrie B. Nickell all were on hand to accept the donations and ring a bell celebrating the start of the upcoming school year.

In addition to the Back-to-School drive, Disney supports education through several other efforts including:

·         Financial support – such as annual contributions to local school districts and grants to Early Learning Coalition centers and other non-profits that focus on education (e.g., A Gift for Teaching, STARS and Junior Achievement);

·         Individual recognition – achievement in academics and community service are recognized through the Disney Dreamers and Doers program; and

·         Expertise – every day, Cast Members share their expertise and knowledge in classrooms all over Central Florida; last year alone they volunteered 14,622 hours in local schools.

Lakeland, Florida (Polk County).  Bernie Little Distributors, Inc. was selected by Anheuser-Busch as the number-one distributorship in the United States and given the Ambassadors of Excellence Award.  The honor was presented in New Orleans February 27, 2012.

Winning over more than seven-hundred distributorships nationwide, both management and employees have shown a high level of perseverance, dedication, commitment, and teamwork.  The one-hundred fifty one member workforce (including the Sebring) also received an award for second place (Highlands-Hardee-Okeechobee Counties) as well.

“Everyone knows what their expectations are,” says Bernie Little Distributors Owner Joe Little.  “In order for our organization to be the top performing wholesale distributor, each employee has to be focused, have loyalty to the company and each other, and maintain an attention to detail.  That’s what makes the difference,” he says and adds that he gives the employees all the credit for the award.

To be considered for the Ambassadors of Excellence Award, a distributor must adhere to intense criteria standards contained in the company performance work manual.  The figures shown by the distributorship during the Anheuser-Busch team audit are the key performance indicator.  State and nationwide, Bernie Little Distributors, Inc. was unmatched.

“During the review and examination by Anheuser-Busch, our people scored nine-hundred ninety six points out of one-thousand points…an almost perfect score,” says Bernie Little President Keith Harris.  He mentioned that the employees were very proud of the honor bestowed on them and that each worker will receive a beautiful ring from Anheuser-Busch (similar to a Super Bowl football ring).

Joe Little and President Keith Harris compares the Bernie Little employees to the Band of Brothers (World War II 2nd Battalion, Easy Company).  The Parachute Infantry Regiment was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army and endured every battle, including Landing of Normandy, Siege of Bastogne, and at the end of the war, the prize…the taking of Eagles Nest.

Owner Joe Little’s manner with his people is comfortable and inspiring.  He is proud of its employees and their award.  He mentioned management gets along well together and that transpires to the organization.  “Customers and employees…that’s all we got,” he says.

In 1972, founder Bernie Little purchased his first Anheuser-Busch distributorship in Lakeland, Florida.  As “Hometown Hero” to the city of Lakeland and recipient of the Horatio Alger award in 1994, he was honored as one who had overcome a difficult childhood and became an adult exemplifying hard work, honesty, and service to others.

“He always wanted to win, no matter what it was,” says Joe.  “All of us have that ethic instilled in us.  As the top winning wholesaler distributor nationwide, we have proven to be consistent.”

Bernie Little Sr. passed away on April 25, 2003.  Little is survived by his two sons, Bernie Little Jr. and Joe Little; daughter Becky Ham; sister Catherine Moore, and four grandchildren.

He was a passionate and dedicated racer of boats.  His Anheuser-Busch sponsored team record is unsurpassed with one-hundred forty one race victories, twenty-four national Championships, and fourteen APBA Gold Cups.  As the receiver of many awards, including the induction into Hall of Champions, Bernie Little had been the most successful team owner in the history of unlimited hydroplane racing.

Bean & Grape Cafe Marks Fourth Anniversary

The second week of May 2012 marks the fourth anniversary of Bean & Grape Café, the coffee and wine bar that has become one of Winter Haven’s favorite places to grab a quick coffee or to get together for a casual lunch, drinks after work, or a birthday party.  The café offers a variety of specialty coffees, beers, and over 300 wine selections, including fair trade and organic wines, wines for every taste and price range, from $5 a glass to $250 a bottle.

Located on 1st Street in Bells Alley, Bean & Grape Café features a sophisticated yet comfortable atmosphere; patrons are invited to relax in overstuffed chairs surrounded by lush plants while a soundtrack of jazz, oldies, and coffeehouse favorites plays softly in the background. The café WiFi allows patrons to work, send email or surf the Internet. At 5:00 p.m. every evening the lights dim, inviting guests to relax further and enjoy cozy conversation. Renovations recently made to the Bells Alley shops—including new, contemporary paint colors, copper accents, and fresh landscaping—make the front patio area inviting for guests who would like to enjoy their beverages outdoors.

The staff of Bean & Grape is friendly and knowledgeable and will help guests to determine what kind of wine they would like, including those who don’t know a great deal about wine and those who claim that they don’t really like wine.  Typically, after asking a guest several simple questions about the types of wines they like (and the types they do not like) and offering them a taste of two or three different varieties, the staff can select a wine they believe the guest will enjoy.

Over the last four years Bean & Grape Café has expanded its hours and its menu to better serve customers. Now opening at 7:00 a.m. on weekdays, the café offers freshly baked muffins, bagels and a spinach, egg and feta flatbread to go with morning coffees and lattes. The lunch menu includes a selection of Mediterranean flatbreads, many of which are seasoned with the café’s signature Pomegranate-Chipotle sauce. The Ahna’s Roast Beef and Brie and the B&G Club are two flatbread choices that are especially popular with customers. The evening menu offers assorted cheese plates and flatbreads that make a nice light meal or snack for guests heading out for an evening at the theatre or other local event. Delicious desserts—made in house—include chocolate mousse, crème brulee, and a decadent chocolate brownie, all of which pair nicely with various wines.

Over the last four years patrons have consistently remarked how they can’t believe that Bean & Grape Cafe is in Winter Haven, noting that it seems more like a café typically found in a big city like Tampa or Miami. And once folks discover Bean & Grape Cafe they become rather loyal, coming in to unwind after work, to hold business and community meetings, and to throw bridal, baby, and even divorce showers in this welcoming environment.

May 7th will begin a week-long celebration of the Bean & Grape’s first four years that will include coffee and wine specials. Check the café’s website for more information:

www.beanandgrapecafe.com. And be sure to “like” Bean & Grape Café on Facebook, “check in” at Bean & Grape Cafe on FourSquare, and follow them on Twitter @BeanAndGrape.

History

Lakeland Volunteers In Medicine began as the dream of various community and organization leaders in 1999. Led primarily by Watson Clinic physicians and the Watson Clinic Foundation, Lakeland leaders came together to find ways to meet the healthcare challenges of the working uninsured in Lakeland. In 2000, a fund-raising campaign was launched. The community responded with a great deal of support, paving the way for the dream to become a reality. Thanks to the generous donation of the Polk County School Board and the City of Lakeland, LVIM took up residence in the historic building that was formerly the John Cox Grammar School on Lakeland Hills Boulevard. LVIM opened on Valentine’s Day, 2001, and is now an independent non-profit organization with a Board of Directors.

Volunteer Doctors

LVIM has more than 100 volunteer doctors from many specialties and 300 nurses and support volunteers who provide medical services at LVIM’s 10,000 square foot medical clinic. LVIM emphasizes utilizing the vast experience and skills of retired physicians and clinical workers. A third of LVIM volunteer physicians are in active practice. Additionally, a number of physicians and other medical technologists provide ancillary services such as radiology and pathology studies at no charge to LVIM. The clinic also provides an opportunity for students to gain experience in the medical field.

“It felt like a good day for BBQ” and that’s how Smokin’ Jim’s BBQ was born. Jim Rabe (aka Smokin’ Jim) started his restaurant after years of perfecting his technique and special sauces for friends and relatives. He also won a variety of awards in BBQ competitions and gained valuable knowledge from pros across the country before settling on the perfect roadside location at 3615 Havendale Blvd., in Auburndale. Nestled between the dividing line of Winter Haven and Auburndale, Smokin’ Jim’s BBQ reflects not only his easy going philosophy, but also his outgoing personality.
Right down to the menu, Smokin’ Jim’s BBQ is a hot spot filled with personal messages, photographs, and even penciled-in children’s height measurements on the dining room columns to give you the feeling of home. When the dining room was upgraded a few years ago, Jim would not let anyone paint the columns because he wouldn’t have the pleasure of seeing the kids enjoy leaving the marks of their height every time they came into the restaurant.
At the end of February, Smokin’ Jim will begin his 8th year in business. Smokin’ Jim’s BBQ holds the title of the “only 4 star barbecue restaurant in Polk County” bestowed upon it by the food critics at the Lakeland Ledger.
With the “best butt in town”, pork butt that is, Smokin’ Jim’s BBQ starts each day at 6:00am with his cousins, Chris and Nash filling the custom smoker grill with premium quality ribs, pork, chicken, brisket and turkey, all rubbed with Jim’s special combination of dry spices. The meat cooks “slow and low” over a 200 degree oak fire as “the love is rubbed into it” just in time to serve the lunch crowd. The menu offers a full variety of BBQ specialties including three sauces (Sweet, Mild, and Hot) and fresh cakes , pies, and banana pudding created daily by Jim’s kitchen manager, Monica. Dine in or take out, Smokin’ Jim’s offers an affordable alternative to fast food in a family friendly environment. And Jim’s motto is “no one will leave Smokin’ Jim’s BBQ hungry”. Many customers cannot finish their plates.
With the addition of manager, Sam Wagner, Smokin’ Jim’s is increasing its catering business and can now provide any size gathering with mouth-watering BBQ anywhere, anytime . Let Smokin’ Jim’s cater your next company function, wedding or high school reunion. No catering is too small or too large for us. Smokin’ Jim’s BBQ will even grill steaks and chicken breast on site for your guests to enjoy. Not in the mood for BBQ, tell Sam what you would like, and he will make it happen. Sam has also been instrumental in locating an express catering trailer which will be bringing Smokin’ Jim’s BBQ to Lakeland. Watch for it soon.
Smokin’ Jim’s BBQ is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00am to 9:00pm and features mouth-watering steaks on the grill Saturday nights from 5pm – 9pm. In addition, the dining room is available for private parties on Sundays and Mondays. Call 863-965-0230 for take-out or to speak with Sam about catering. Our website is www.smokinjimsbbq.ws.
Jim Rabe would like to thank all his loyal customers, friends, and family who have supported the restaurant over the past 7 years and looks forward to bigger things to come with Smokin’ Jim’s BBQ Restaurant.
